The NBA offseason movements have now begun in full effect, as the free agency window started last Thursday at 6 PM ET. Unsurprisingly, due to the immediacy of the negotiations, rumors regarding teams’ signings were spreading all over the internet.
One of the teams that was in desperate need of change was the Dallas Mavericks, especially if they wanted to build a competitive roster for next season. With some movements already made by their front office, have they been satisfactory? Let us grade them.
Seth Curry, Two-Year Deal: A
Despite his reliability and consistency throughout his career, Seth Curry is still underappreciated by many. When given the chance, he is incredibly effective on the offensive side, particularly on three-point shots, where he averages a career percentage of 43.5%.
Fortunately for him, he has already played for the Mavericks on two separate occasions, which makes this a familiar territory. Additionally, his tenure in the league will be of great help, adding plenty of experience to Dallas’ roster. This increased responsibility for Curry is likely to play in his favor.
Kyrie Irving, Three-Year Re-Sign: B
The impact and unreal performances Kyrie Irving can have on a daily basis are undeniable at this point in his career. Averaging 27.1 Points, 5.1 Rebounds, and 5.5 Assists this last season, it was virtually impossible they could find a similar player in today’s NBA market.
However, it is still unclear whether his addition to the Mavericks is the best fit for the team, mainly due to his position, and playstyle. Despite this uncertainty, they seem to be pretty confident about this choice, trusting Irving to be one of the faces of the organization.
Dwight Powell, Three-Year Re-Sign: B-
Powell is a solid player, always great to have on your team. Nevertheless, his presence requires the team to play differently whenever he steps on the court. Taking into consideration how NBA basketball has changed these last years, mainly in the center position, he cannot be starting as the team’s “big man” anymore.
Unfortunately, the organization needs to find him a role in which he feels more comfortable playing, such as the forward position, and continue looking for a bigger, more aggressive center, especially on the offensive side, to complement each other.
There are still many NBA offseason movements to come in this Free Agency window. Regardless, the Mavericks are making good progress toward their goal for next season, solidifying their core while adding trustworthy pieces that ultimately improve their roster, especially around their superstar, Luka Dončić. What other deals would you like them to close?
