Top 5 Breakout Candidates for 2023-24 Season

Top 5 Breakout Candidates for 2023-24 Season

Every year we see bits and flashes of a player’s potential. Sometimes it only happens once a season, some catch fire and become key pieces for their teams. Then there are those who every year find a way to get better. These five players caught my attention throughout the 2022 season and convinced me that 2023 will be their breakout season.

5. Tyler Herro

Herro was in the middle of another solid season until he broke his hand. He missed the entire Heat’s run to the Finals. After improving every year since coming into the league, he made a leap in 2021 that earned him the move into the starting lineup. His numbers stayed almost identical but the year of experience will do him wonders. With a chip on his shoulder, Herro will be back next season looking to prove he is the future of the Miami Heat or wherever he may end up.

4. Austin Reaves

Reaves was the most consistent player in the Lakers’ run to the Conference Finals. I’m not saying Reaves will be a 20+ scorer but 16 to 19 ppg is realistic. He plays within his skills and isn’t scared of the big moment. With another year of mileage under Lebron James and Anthony Davis the Lakers don’t have an option but to get Reaves more involved.

3. Tyrese Maxey

Maxey made a statement since arriving in Philly and got better each season. With James Harden possibly on his way out the 76ers will look to him to take another leap. With his ability to score on the break and read the opposing defense, Maxey has the tools to do just that.

2. Keldon Johnson

Another player that has been getting better every year is Keldon Johnson. He’s been making the best out of the situation in San Antonio becoming their primary offensive threat by a huge margin. The arrival of Victor Wembanyama will open the floor and provide Johnson with plenty of opportunities to have a breakout season. Wembanyama won’t take away from Johnson if anything he’s going to make his life way easier.

1. Mikal Bridges

Bridges took the league by storm after being trade for Kevin Durant. In 26 games with the Nets, Bridges averaged 26 points while shooting 47% from the field leading the Nets into the playoffs. His play impressed everyone in the league and has created a lot of interest. The Nets, made it clear they are not trading him, and the plan is to build around him. Bridges will be handed the keys to Brooklyn making him my top breakout candidate.

Breakout Candidates Honorable Mentions

There’s a lot of guys that will be in great positions to have a big season. My honorable mentions include two new teammates that will be the main guys in Washington. With the departure of Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma and Jordan Poole will have the green light for the Wizards. Don’t be surprised if one of them averages more than 25 points next season.

An NBA season is unpredictable, anything from trades and injuries can derail someone’s rise. Without any of those happening, I really like these guys’ chances of reaching another level in their game.
