As the 2024-2025 NBA season begins, all eyes are on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as he moves on in the league. After a spectacular 2023-2024 season, where he averaged 31.4 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game, SGA has established himself as one (if not the top) guards in the NBA. Now, the conversation is about whether he can improve his game further and claim the league’s best award: the MVP.
Shai Gilgeous Alexander’s polished skills
SGA’s case for MVP hinges on his all-around game. His ability to score with efficiency from all three levels: Inside, midrange, and beyond the arc, sets him apart from many of his peers. He has become the primary offensive engine for the Oklahoma City Thunder, shouldering the scoring load while also allowing good game for his teammates. His talent for breaking down defenses and finding open offensive opportunities has made him one of the most versatile threats in the league by a landslide. But beyond his scoring, SGA’s defensive performance, length, and anticipation on the other end of the floor make him a true two-way player, which is often a key component in MVP decision and overall voting.
For Gilgeous-Alexander to truly contend for MVP, however, team success will be crucial. The Thunder have shown promise, with a core that includes Alex Caruso, Jalen Williams, Lu Dort, Isiah Hartenstein, and Chet Holmgren. If they can take the step and secure a playoff spot, or even a top-four seed in the Western Conference (which has been quite challenging for a while now), SGA’s MVP candidacy will gain significant momentum, just like last season, where he was in the podium.
Competition + Setbacks
Historically, MVP winners often come from teams with high win totals, so the Thunder’s performance will play a pivotal role in shaping SGA’s chances. Nevertheless, competition is highly stiff for this award, with players such as Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, even Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum fighting for the 2024-2025 NBA MVP.
In the end, SGA has all the tools to make a serious MVP run. If he can continue improving, stay healthy, be highly consistent overall, and lead the Thunder to a successful season: there’s no reason why he can’t be in the conversation alongside the league’s best. This could be the year Shai Gilgeous-Alexander takes home the MVP trophy.
