As we know, with the start of the 2024-2025 NBA season, a lot of teams have been extremely surprising when it comes to their basketball level and the ability they have to close out games, as well as position themselves in a great position in their conference. In the Western Conference, competition is stiffer than always. So, why is it that the rockets are the newest 2nd seed in the West?
Team Chemistry + Defense

This is arguably the most important reason behind the Rockets’ surge. Team chemistry and coaching staff has developed really well over this season. We were able to see this change of direction last year, where they had an excellent season closing. Their performance has been even better this season, and could actually manage to clinch a good playoff spot.
Their young core and variety of players have been outstanding, while their more experienced players have been leading the group in a great way. As a result, they’ve won 8 out of the last 10 games, with a current record of 15-6, holding the second seed in the West thus far.
Possible setbacks

With every single “young” team, the biggest possible obstacle is playoff experience. Since they missed the playoffs during 2023-2024, they haven’t had any tangible playoff experience that is going to translate into a guaranteed victory during this time. As they could have a fruitful postseason run, they could also be a first round exit if not handled correctly.
All in all, the Houston Rockets are a powerful young team with very bright future in the NBA. Their success will be up to them and how they perform under pressure when it matters most.
