The NFL preseason is among us and it’s time we start diving more deep into it. There will be a lot to watch out for and keep an eye on. A lot of it really is dependent on how much players play and what are the depth charts between each preseason week. It’s going to be interesting to see the progression of players during the preseason and to see the developments prior to the regular season. Let’s get into some things to watch out for…
Who will be the #1 receiver for the Chiefs?
The Chiefs’ current wide receiver core doesn’t necessarily strike fear in many defensive backs. They have some really good #2 receivers in Mecole Hardman or Juju Smith-Schuster. It’s going to be interesting if anyone can move up the depth chart and take control as the #1 wide receiver. There’s also rookie Skyy Moore who can surprise some people as well potentially and take it.
According to Chiefs WR coach Joe Bleymaier, Skyy Moore has been one of the biggest standouts in the practices. I’d be curious to see if he can move up the depth chart and be able to replace some of the production by Tyreek Hill.
Rookie Quarterbacks
There’s probably not one rookie quarterback that will start the regular season in Week 1. Although, there are plenty of rookie quarterbacks that will play in the preseason. For example, you will see plenty of Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, and Matt Corral in the preseason and play a decent amount of snaps.
There is definitely a reason why no quarterback was drafted until the 2nd round in this past year’s draft. Not one quarterback is necessarily ready to start right now. Realistically, the only quarterbacks that can somehow potentially take on as a starter Week 1 with a strong preseason showing are Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder. Malik Willis will be redshirting behind Ryan Tannehill and Matt Corral at least right now.
How much will starters play?
The thing that most fans care about when they watch the preseason. How much will the starters of their team play in the preseason. I wouldn’t expect starters to play more than a series or two, but it will be interesting to see which starters play more than the other. For example, Josh Jacobs, who will probably be the Raiders starting running back, he ended up being like the one starter that played for the Raiders this Hall of Fame game vs the Jaguars.
